Cliff van Thillo

Photography & Interview

I was asked by the talented illustrator Cliff van Thillo to photograph him for his website. I really tried to capture his personality by photographing him in his workspace, surrounded by his art and his collection of trinkets. Because his style is very unique and artisan I wanted to use analog photography to reflect on this style. Included is a small interview about his way of work and vision. All shot on 35mm Kodak colour film.

“I tend to make little theatrical compositions to tell a story. The longer you look at them, the more you see. I love rewarding people with that experience.”

“Sometimes stories or feelings are hard to express in realistic images. I try to translate those stories into understandable and imaginative illustrations using my own visual language.”

“It would be amazing if one day I can reach a bigger audience with my work. Working for big newspapers or designing theatrical decorations for amusement parks.

Really giving people the experience of being in a completely different world.”
